Leo Tolstoy is known, word-wide, as one of the greatest authors of all time. His works include the masterpieces "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina", depicting Russian life realistically, yet with a writing flaire that is gripping. These two books stand at the peak of realistic fiction.

Tolstoy was a moral philosopher, noted for his ideas of nonviolent resistance through his work of "The Kingdom of God is Within You", which in turn had a profound influence on men like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

Autobiographical Writings

• A Confession
  Written in 1879, and published two years later (1881), this work is written by a 51-year-old Tolstoy who looks back, considering his life thusfar a failure. Chapters 4-7 deal with a period during which he struggled with suicide. Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

• First Recollections
  Though written by Tolstoy on May 17, 1878, this work was not published until 1923, when Charles Scribner, of New York, published it.
